It takes unspeakable motivation to build an online business and keep going before there’s a payoff ($$). Many people will start but fold because they lacked a strong entrepreneurial mindset. Hold these business mantras in your mind and your odds of surviving all the doubt and struggle are inevitably increased.
The allure of location independence, uncapped earnings and career fulfillment lure many people into starting an online business. And, how could it not?
It’s the siren’s call that we’ve been exposed to via influencers and Facebook ads, and they’re assuring us that freedom and uncapped earning potential aren’t just myths.
The destination exists, but the journey is filled with doubt, sweat equity and apprehension that rivals any mythological creature.
Having an entrepreneurial mindset isn’t vital just for starting your own online business – it’s a make-or-break factor in all online work. That lack of the right remote work mindset has killed more dreams than failure ever could.
Business Mantras, Entrepreneurial Mindset – Says Who?
I’m not some guru or millionaire speaking down to you from the mountaintop. I’m just a gal who believed that if other people were thriving online, then why not me?
I wanted to thrive, too.
So I started a blog!
And, it failed. Big ole failure. Because I didn’t have the right entrepreneurial mindset.
This blog (blog #2), Writing From Nowhere, helped me find what I wanted to do and then I used it as a platform to launch my online business as a Pinterest manager. That evolved further into launching an online shop, and I hope to have a whole product line someday!
So, no mountaintop sermons here. Just consider me your digital friend next door who is here to give you some advice over a cup of coffee.
The journey to building a successful online business is difficult, lonely and feels endless at times… but the payoff is h u g e.
Mindset is everything on that journey.
Keep your mindset straight and you could see every online business dream that you have come to life. How would that entrepreneurial success feel?

8 Business Mantras That Will Build Your Entrepreneurial Mindset & Get You Through The Toughest Times
Keep these business mantras center of mind and you will be able to enjoy the journey, no matter how steep it gets.
1. Do It And It Will Be Done
Have you ever sat in front of your computer with unfocused eyes and an internal groan of “I just want it to be doooooone.”
Ya know what? DO IT and it WILL be done.
This is a bit of tough love that we need to give ourselves as entrepreneurs.
Sometimes accomplishing our to-do lists may feel complicated. There may be powerful internal resistance and weak external motivation. That’s where this business mantra comes in.
Do it and it will be done. Go through the growing pains of building your business from the ground up and then you can automate, outsource and eliminate tasks that you feel this much resistance to completing.
2. Hard Work Is The Shortcut
When your to-do list is kicking your behind instead of the other way around, that’s when this business mantra comes in to reinforce your entrepreneurial mindset: hard work *is* the shortcut.
Now, there will be a lot of shortcuts offered up to you. I reckon your Facebook ads will parade just about every shortcut imaginable by your scroll for a one-time purchase of only $197.
Of course, you can pay to save some headaches or expedite your learning. Some people will be able to use money as an exchange for large amounts of time by hiring a virtual assistant (a VA), taking courses or getting one-on-one coaching.
But they will still have to implement, develop and sell things themselves. No amount of help will be a replacement for figuring out what it is that you offer people and who yo uoffer it to.
You can never outsource the most important tasks of your business. Not in the beginning, at least.
3. One Paragraph Closer
Writing plays a big role in many online businesses. And, it may feel really complicated sometimes, but it’s actually incredibly straightforward: keep writing. Keep publishing. Keep providing value.
Publishing content online is foundational for getting website traffic from search engines and building a relationship with readers. It’s the reason every business has a blog – that’s where the magic happens online.
Writing is also the bedrock of two of the most popular online businesses that people pursue: being a blogger and creating niche websites.
Plus, copywriting in general (writing text for your website that will advertise your services) is an essential skill for successful entrepreneurs.
Writing is just like building a house: one brick at a time. Don’t overcomplicate this task.
4. Passive Income
These 2 words are a business mantra in themselves. Passive income: the big prize that the online business world offers.
Active income is the process of working in exchange for money. So, you work and are paid for 30 days, but on day 31 if you don’t work then you’re not paid.
Passive income is the process of working for 30 days making, say, an e-book, and then selling it and making money from it for the next year.
With hard work, automation, utilization of the best online business tools and some wisdom, you *can* make money in your sleep.
Lots of people do every night.
It takes a lot of work to get to that point, but it’s the real crown jewel of the online business world that should be kept on your mind as you work through the early days of your business.
The first time I really made money as a blogger while was two years after I launched my blog. It was Christmas time and my gift guide had suddenly started ranking on the first page of Google.
I made rent that month off of the passive income that I made from Amazon affiliate sales. My 2 years of hard work had been vindicated.
Now, to offer some context, my rent is less than $200 a month. This is an intentional choice that my husband and I make to keep our lifestyle costs low so we can afford to travel more, and I know it’s lower than most.
Passive income for passive income’s sake isn’t really the goal here. The goal is to work smarter, not harder (it’s a cliché for a reason, and should be one of your business mantras as well).
5. Just Gonna Do It
Through all of the doubts about whether or not you’ll make it online, just commit: you’re just gonna do it.
And that “it” is going after what you want out of your one and only life.
This business mantra comes from a personal place for me. In 2017, I met this Dutch guy while backing through Latin America. Doing life side by side was like putting down a pair of binoculars and picking up a kaleidoscope. After 6 months of knowing each other, I moved to his country of the Netherlands.
Everyone back home brought up the elephant in the room: is he tHe OnE?!
But it was never about if he was the one or not. It was about what kind of life I was leading. Where did my decisions come from – from a place of fear and insecurity? Or from optimism and instinct?
This is the same optimism and instinct you need to champion in your entrepreneurial mindset.
You don’t need to justify every move. No boss is asking for a meeting to discuss your ideas.
Be the kind of person who’s just gonna go after what they want, and that’s a good enough reason to try.
6: If They Could, I Can
A huge part of an entrepreneurial mindset is having business role models that you can look to for inspiration and to learn from. Follow people on Instagram, subscribe to email lists and listen to podcasts by people that make you nod your head and think “if they could, I can.”
This is actually the first business mantra I ever developed for myself. When I was still working in the corporate world (more on that here) I was dazzled by stories of people working online and traveling full-time.
They had their laptops, they had digital skills and they were willing to take the jump.
Well, I already had a laptop. I knew that I could learn skills that would make me money, and I wanted to become a digital nomad more than anything. There, it was born: if they could, I can.
Surround yourself with reminders that the hard work is worth it: on your Instagram feed, in your inbox, in your friend group. If they could, you can is a business mantra that will get you moving.
Go guns-blazing at your motivation setting a quote by a famous woman to inspire you every time you check your phone.
7. Get Up Your Mountain
This business mantra serves to remind you of the scale of the project you’re tackling. Building an online business is climbing a mountain.
No one really smiles at their Starbucks while perfectly styled in front of a MacBook. Those styled influencer photos are not telling the whole story. Where’s the sweat? How often do they cry?
Building an online business is a monumental task. You’re creating something from the ground up that will support you and be the vessel for your stability and creativity.
It’s freakin’ huge. It’s a mountain. Now, get climbing.
8: It’s Worth It
Building a business that works for you even while you’re sleeping is a bliss that can’t be described.
It is worth…
- all of the struggle to stay motivated as you keep working hard but the payoff is still down the road
- every social situation where people ask you “how your business is going?” and you have to say that you’re still working for no money
- the dark moments where you think about how much less work it would be to be employed
Picture yourself after you’ve “made it,” however that is defined for you.
Imagine how it would feel to wake up tomorrow in that place. How it would look. How your life would be different.
This exercise is called visioning, and doing this on a regular basis will help fortify your entrepreneurial mindset significantly.
It really, really is worth it.
